AA1 has two cases better than 1-3, and both GAA games also have two cases better than 1-3. It's not a bad place for a case to be.

One weird thing with AA7 is that the AA5-6 director left Capcom, so it'd likely be Takumi doing it. Not sure what that means for the main cast.

G2-5 opinions:

This is maybe the worst case in the series? It's not necessarily as bad moment to moment as some of the really trash cases, but the effect is has on everything that built up to it makes it hit so much harder. It was incredibly obvious Kazuma's dad would be innocent, and also disappointing, since him being guilty was one of the things that made 2-3 interesting. Once G2-3 was over, I'd had enough of the stuff from 10 years ago, so everything that focused on that part was a waste of time. Jigoku was cool, but also obviously guilty from the moment he appears in England (though it seems not everyone realized this?). I hated prosecutor Kazuma and the very concept of him was stupid. The cherry on the shit sandwich was Holmes's ridiculous hologram thing at the end, which not only is really stupid, but they also waste a ton of time explaining how it works. Way worse than anything in AJ.

G1-3 and G1-5 are generally agreed to be good cases from what I've seen, though not everyone agrees.

G2-3 is the best GAA case by a wide margin IMO. I think that might be the consensus, but I could be wrong.

Some thoughts on Utawarerumono Mask of Truth, which I'm a bit over 14 hours into now (last notable thing that happened was Munechika joining up a couple hours ago).

1. I didn't mention this earlier, but Shinonon is great. Any scene with her is basically guaranteed to be joyful (including in MoD). She might be the best character in the game, since she doesn't have annoying flaws bringing her down.

2. MoT is definitely much better than MoD. The changes with Haku make for a much better experience, with less stupid comedy. The greater focus on war is also nice. Most characters are better in this game in general.

3. It's nice that there are more battles. I dunno if there's much of a point in all the side battle stuff though. I didn't do any free battles in MoD.

4. Unfortunately MoT still shares some of the same flaws as MoD. The game can be incredibly slow, and though it's better this time, the comedy's still not very good. They could cut at least half of the slice of life scenes, since they're mostly not written very well. The problem's gotten much worse since Kuon became a major character again. For a while I thought she might be better, and she's not quite as bad as she was in MoD, but since most of the rest of the cast is much better here, she's even more the worst than she used to be.

5. This is irrelevant, but is it just me, or is every single character, male or female, young or old, single? Even the parents are all widows/widowers. That's... kinda weird.

I'm suprised Nintendo hasn't called Zelda its own genre yet, seeing how I haven't seen a single video game try to be like Zelda.

I recommend playing Okami.

Also some people quite like Death's Door, if it's a 2D Zelda-like you want. Hyper Light Drifter as well.

To me sequence breaking means exploration really matters.

For example I love hollow knight and I hate Ori, and it kind of boils down to that principle. Exploration is really exciting in the former because you can actually find interesting areas and power ups that are completely unnecessary to beat the game, and in the later its just a linear game where you have to backtrack to get everything. Fusion had the same problem

Did you only play the original version of Ori? The Definitive Edition has a few optional areas.

And you can definitely sequence break. Maybe they made that easier in the DE as well?

The new abilities you get are the main thing that make the genre for me. It's part of why I wouldn't classify most 3D open world action adventure games as Metroidvanias. If you just want a cool map that fills itself in, aren't most of the Sony first party open world PS4 games Metroidvanias?

Yeah, before the term Metroidvania started to pop-up more often, I would call them side-scroller action games. I guess thats just too broad now.

1. That doesn't really apply to 3D games that are Metroidvanias
2. That applies more to Mega Man or Contra style games than Metroid style games IMO

The context for this is literally describing what genre a Metroid game is.

Though even there you could call it a 2D action platformer and get most of the way there. Add that it's open world or exploration focused for the rest.

Finished with Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception. Bad game! I've beaten a lot of games so far this year, and this was the worst of the lot. My complaints from earlier posts applied less in the second half of the game (pyre was right about the point where it gets better), but they didn't vanish completely. Even later on the comedy scenes were abysmal, and a lot of characters were real dumb. More spoilery thoughts:

Kuon is just such a fucking piece of shit the whole game. Why does she constantly treat Haku like garbage? Why do people like her? Were they trying to make a comparison to Dekopompo, with both of them being children of beloved men who get supported regardless of how terrible they are? I dunno. She's a bit better in her serious scenes, but not much better. Her motivations are never as clear as they could be, and feel like she just whatever the plot wants her to do.

Likewise Nekone. The game constantly had me thinking about how stupid she was, and that was before the ending scene where she gets her brother killed. Her introduction is supposed to be about how smart she is and how she deserves to be a scholar and is being held back by foolish conservative elements, but she never demonstrates her intelligence, really. She's the dumbest character in the game from the start to the end, and the comedy with her is pretty miserable.

I didn't dislike the rest of the cast to the same degree, but the comedy scenes with them were never good. The big scene with Haku and Mikado was the best scene in the game. Everyone was good there. The twin priestesses were probably the best of the main crew, so it's a shame Kuon treated them like garbage whenever she was around them.

Thoughts on some other parts: the first war was solid, but the villain wasn't very believable. The guy who kills his subordinates every time we see him unified 100 tribes that had been warring for generations? The generals using their masks was cool at least. Dekopompo felt like he got too much screentime throughout the game relative to the other generals.

Going to war with Tuskur was a great idea. Some parts of that were cool, but the stuff with no one dying was pretty unbelievable. The game would've been better in general with more of a willingness to kill people.

The very ending was quite promising. Having Haku take Oshtor's place is a great idea (I always liked Oshtor, though Ukon wasn't good). Should hopefully solve some of the comedy failings.

Gave Uta 1 an 8 and this a 4. Hopefully Uta 3 is a return to form.

Sure, but good on their own and good together is way better than just good together. And the overarching mystery of GAA isn't good anyway

Takumi is writing a Sherlock Holmes novel with GAA more than he's writing an Ace Attorney game, and in a mystery novel, the mystery builds and builds until the big resolution at the end, as opposed to Ace Attorney, which may have an overarching story it's trying to tell, but each episode is largely self-contained.

The previous AA games are more similar to Sherlock Holmes books if anything, since most of them are short stories.

And none of the Sherlock boss are anything like GAA, which is a collection of related mysteries that're part of a bigger mystery.
